How to import DVD and video to iMovie!

Not all media sources can be imported into iMovie to edit. So you need to know what can be dragged in and can i add iMovie ignorant file to content the produce.

Video formats that iMovie supported:
Tapeless Camcorder(MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and AVCHD) ;
Tape based DV-Standard and HDV (High Definition Video) ;
Part Camera\Mobile Phone video\other video recorder devices(MPEG-1, MEPG-2, MPEG-4, H.264);
MPEG-4 video.
iMovie supported camcorder and device

In the final analysis, limited format supports iMovie. How if you want to edit DVD segments, YouTube FLV Video, QuickTime video, M4V, MOV, MKV, AVI, WMV and other video formats on iMovie. Below i will introduce someway!

How to import Non-Commercial DVD into iMovie
1) Insert DVD.
2) Open Disk Utility.
3) Select the disk and then select "New Image". Save the disk image wherever is convenient, such as the desktop.
4) Once the disk image is written, open iMovie.
5) Mount the new disk image. A "Camera Detected, Scanning Contents" window will appear in iMovie, followed by an import window. You can now import the DVD contents and start editing away.

If you want to import commercial DVD and other videos that refused by iMovie, you need a converter that can rip DVD and convert video to iMovie supported format MPEG-4(MP4). You can try iSkysoft iMedia Converter for Mac, which cost you $49, from our studio. Also handbrake is best choice among free converters. It can convert both DVDs and videos. Here is a guide:

How to use handbrake to rip DVD and convert video on MAC OS X!

After converting, you can import converted videos to iMovie to edit.

How do you mount the new disk image in imovie exactly?

You click on the image of the video which shows up in the bottom left of the Disk Utility and click Open at the top. This mounts the image and as long as iMovie is open, it will treat it like finding a new camera.

my imovie does not seem to show anything like that when i'm mounting the disk image.
is there any other way i can do the same thing?
thanks

Help! I'm having the same problem. After it mounted on my desktop is shows up as a dmg. I tried dragging it to Imovie but that does not work, neither does going to file import.

Make sure your selecting the bottom disk in disk utility. It shouldn't take only two seconds to create the new image. If it did, then you clicked on the wrong one.

I think you have to click on the camera icon to get it working - just mounting the dmg didn't do anything - but it started importing once I clicked the camera icon

so I did what the steps did, but when it got to actually putting it on imovie, it didnt work. i have it on my desktop as '.dmg' but i cant drag it onto imovie, or install it or anything! Ive tried what Josh H said to anonomous but its not working and im going crazy! heeellllp!

Woo hoo! It worked! Thanks, Josh H. for explaining how to mount the disk image. That part was missing from another tutorial I read.

I have done everything, including mounting the new disk. It sill will not import into iMovie. I am using iMovie '09, does this tutorial work for that or only for earlier versions?

once it opens in imovie and i click "import all", it finishes, and i click 'done"... then it has a new event with nothing in it...
and in the import window, there are 2 clips, but you can't actually play them

Anonymous said something about a camera icon? What is that?
Currently it converts to dmg (which takes awhile), but when I open it it shows up the same way it did before, with a file called "video_ts" and a file called "audio_ts". Video_ts has .bup, .ifo, and .vob files in it, non of which iMovie can open. The Ausio_ts file was empty. But like I said, this is how it showed up when I first entered the dvd, so the conversion did nothing (although it shows up as .dmg on my desktop).

Hello--this is a shot-in-the-dark but hoping someone is up for a challenge :-) When I double click any .dmg with iMovie open, iMovie quits. I get the report that asks if I want to send to Apple, Relaunch yada yada. No matter which I choose it tells me Apple isn’t available and try again later. Basically sometime between doing the 1st movie and several hours later the other one…I noticed the icon on my OWC ext. hd icon had changed. It looked odd because it had the Apple iTunes musical note w/blue background and 4 purple boxes above it. (???) I double clicked to open it (I know, I know but I it was my ext. hd—I’m the one that put it there) and it showed a blue box with a bow above it (I know this keeps sounding worse) and below (where it reads Applications, Pictures, depending where you are at in the sidebar) it said something about “sharing”. Now I can’t for the life of me I can’t remember what it said but at the time I was heading out for the day and I Googled it quickly before leaving. Google searches came back something about it is a kind of “sharing” that you can try before you buy something. So, I deleted it. I don’t keep my history so I can’t pull up the exact name, now a day later. Anyhow, once I did this my OWC ext. hd icon went back to the original. I went on my merry way and now I can’t import into iMovie from .dmg anymore---iMovie quits. I can still do other things in iMovie---but not if I double click a .dmg file. I’m sure I’m just SOL but thought I would ask if anyone has heard of this???

I am soooo hoping someone can help me. I read all your comments about importing movie files from DVD but it is not working for me :( I open disk utility, create a new image and save it on desk top. It shows up as a .dmg file. Then I open iMovie and go on to double click on the .dmg file to open it. After a few seconds, the file opens and instead of iMovie detecting it as a camera, a new file shows up on the desktop that looks like an external hard drive. If I click on the camera icon within iMovie, it asks me whether I want to capture video or to connect a camera. I am getting desperate. Why is this happening?

so I think a simple DVD Ripper can convert DVD to iMovie.
And the one I use for Convert DVD to iPhone 5 is nice, if you need you can take a try.

iskysoft dvd ripper is of course a great video converter, however, it's somehow too expensive.
